10 lessons the Arts teach
Play Video

John Ritchie (BEd Hons), The Artroom’s teacher, says:

After 25 years of teaching experience I decided that I wanted to pursue a different direction in my career. I am passionate about bringing the fun, challenge and excitement of Art to as many different people as I can. As well as teaching in my own studio I want to go into schools and work with teachers and pupils to realize their artistic potential.

I am very aware that there are many ‘artist in residence’ schemes, many of which produce some excellent results, but they can be limited and only focus on the artist's particular skills. I wanted to offer something different.

As a teacher of some experience I have a good understanding of the pressures and constrains that are on schools and teachers. To be able to fit in meaningful and positive art experiences into an already overcrowded curriculum can be a challenge, often resulting in less than satisfactory results, or at worst a lip service effort.

The National Curriculum Art and Design document is now very brief, and if schools are not careful they can be tempted into paying superficial attention to its requirements.

I can help your school develop their art curriculum in several different ways:

Special Art Projects

It may be that you want your pupils to work on a special art project.

This could be a leavers' art project for Year 6, a whole school celebratory project, working with a nurture group on a specific topic, or ideas on supporting a particular project.

All art projects can be tailor made to suite your specific needs.

Teacher Training

The Artroom offers a wide variety of teacher training opportunities. There will be specific courses throughout the year all aimed at developing teacher's skills and knowledge of the subject, so they can approach the subject with renewed enthusiasm and understanding.

Whole staff training and consultation is also available.

After School Clubs

Why not arrange a hassle free after school Art club for your school?  There are some days still free for regular weekly art clubs. All the materials and administration is run by The Artroom, the school just needs to provide suitable facilities.

The Art Clubs would need a minimum of 8 pupils

Teachers' Art Group

The Teachers' Art Group will encourage all Primary School  staff that teach art to actively engage in the subject. There is a  termly news letter (with ideas and thoughts about the subject), free art activities, discounts on Artroom classes and an opportunity to share good practice.

I hope that I will be able to work with your school and develop Art in your curriculum. Do get in touch either by email (the-artroom@hotmail.com) or phone 07572 655 255
